Smart Connector System
“Stack Rack System” was part of the midterm project “Experiments with the 3D-Printer” at the Köln International School of Design. Inspired by the fast development of rapid manufacturing technologies, which gain increased entry to private households, Phillip Funke and me worked on a printable smart connector system to build shelves and other furniture like tables or chairs. To use the potential of rapid manufacturing technologies such as 3D-Printing offers, we had two main goals in mind. On the one hand we wanted to make the user independent from a certain vendor and his offered designs. The user should be as flexible as possible to choose his or her preferred size, color and material and enlarge the system easily by printing further connectors. And on the other hand to develop a connector system with which it is possible to set up the customized furniture without using tools (or at least as less as possible).
The idea was that the furniture can be easily customized via a web application. The user can define the length, width and thickness of the boards and prebuild the shelve inside the application. Depending on these data the connectors resize in length, width and thickness to reach the needed stability and the number of required connectors is calculated. After finishing the customization process a ready-to-manufacture .stl-file for 3D-Printing can be exported.
